Hampstead Theatre is committed to providing a website that will give all users of varying abilities and technology as rich an experience as possible. To achieve this, our website has been designed and built to meet level AA conformance within W3C WAI guidelines.
This statement outlines what steps we have taken to accommodate the needs of our users.

Navigation

A key feature of this site is that users who are unable to use a mouse can easily navigate using the keyboard or screen readers. This website uses:

•    A sensible tab order so that a user can tab through the site in a logical order.

•    Navigation code that will always sit below the content. This means that for people using screen readers, for example, the navigation won't be read out at the start of every single page you visit. Calls-to-action at the end of copy will also enable easy movement around the site, and direct visitors to the next most appropriate page or step.

Additional features of this site include:

•    Scalable text - all copy can be increased in size by holding down the ctrl key and + (to enlarge text) or ctrl and – to reduce text size.

•    Style sheets - users can incorporate their own stylesheets, making the site flexible and adaptable for users with specific needs e.g background or text colour.

•    Links make sense out of context – all links have titles to aid understanding, and 'click here' is not written in the copy.

•    All media content has a text alternative for images and animations. Where we have animation, we create scripts or descriptions to literally illustrate the action whereever appropriate.

•    The HTML we produce conforms to the standard: XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Flash animation and javascript will never be used for critical information.

•    Forms - always have default values to help users understand what information to enter, and to be understandable by screen readers.

•    Headers - correct header structure so a user will know where in the site they are at any time, and crucially, will know how to move to another part of the site.
